What is an atom?

All matter is made up of microscopic particles called molecules. We can divide a molecule into smaller parts, called atoms. An atom is the smallest part possible-- it cannot be divided.  In fact, the word "atom" in Greek means "indivisible."

Electricity is formed when electrons move from one atom to another.

Wait and see!

A few questions to get you ready for tomorrow:

Do you know who these people are?

And what does this machine do?

 Answers:

The people are:

Annie Oakley (1860-1926).  She was famous for her shooting skills and travelled with Buffalo Bill's Wild west Show.

Thomas Edison (1847- 1931). He invented the light bulb and many other things, including the machine in the pictures: the kinetoscope. The name comes from the Greek words "kineto" meaning movement, and "scopos" meaning "to watch." This machine was the first motion picture camera.

Edison made a film of Annie Oakley shooting glass balls:

He filmed at "The Black Maria", the first ever movie studio!

Where are the sheep???

Hello! I hope you are having a good holiday. When we get back, we are going to study Economic Sectors in Social Science.  Do you remember the three economic sectors?

In the Primary Sector, we have Farming, Fishing, and Forestry.

One kind of farming is Livestock Farming (raising animals.)

Here is a challenge for you!  I will post the answer after we go back to school.

  • Liezel Kennedy, a sheep farmer from Saskatchewan in Canada, has a flock of about 550 she tends to everyday.
  • One morning this week she she came to the fields find they had all disappeared - until she looked a little closer.
  • In fact the hundreds of woolly livestock are carefully hidden among the snow and grass in the barren landscape.
Can you find the sheep?
